New tool helps farmers select the best refuge
NEW TOOL HELPS FARMERS SELECT THE BEST REFUGE IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 12, 2011 RIDGETOWN, ON ¨C A web©based tool provides all the important information farmers need to comply with current insect resistant management requirements for all currently available Bt corn hybrids in Ontario.

The Canadian Corn Refuge Hybrid Selector allows farmers to select their Bt hybrid or trait of choice and the field size, and provides a list of potential refuge hybrids along with information on refuge size, location, treatment options and herbicide tolerance.

¡°This is an excellent and important tool for farmers,¡± says Cara McCreary, Acting Field Crop Entomologist © Program Lead with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Rural Affairs.

¡°With so many different Bt traits available to farmers, management can be confusing and this tool helps sort through all of the options while ensuring proper resistance management.¡±

The Refuge Selector has been developed through collaboration of the Canadian Corn Pest Coalition, the Ontario Corn Committee and the Canadian Seed Trade Association. It can be accessed at www.refugeselector.ca.
