For immediate release
[Burlington/Guelph, ON] September 14, 2011 – “Discover Agriculture in the City” will provide a rare opportunity for people to find out more about where their fresh food comes from – directly from the source, the people who grow it! This fun-filled event about food and farming is coming to the Burlington Mall October 1 to 2.
Discover Agriculture in the City is a free, family-oriented urban festival offering the public a chance to explore and discover the amazing world of agriculture and food, and the role it plays in Ontario. Hosted by government and industry partners, the festival will combine fun agri-food displays, a children’s activity area and food bank drive with live stage presentations from chefs, farmers, scientists, and entertainers.. No matter their age, mall visitors will find something of interest.
The opening ceremonies on Saturday October 1 at 11:30 a.m. will feature a welcome by entertaining Town Crier David Vollick, followed by cooking demonstrations by local chef and author Lynn Ogryzlo. Lynn will also talk about her book, The Ontario Table, and the $10 local food challenge. The stage area will be located at the end of the main mall corridor near the Zellers store at the Burlington Mall.
The display area will include gardening experts, food safety tips, and information about how farming impacts daily life. The stage presentations will include cooking demonstrations and food sampling with chefs and speakers on subjects ranging from bees to edible wild foods. The children’s area will feature colouring contests, face painting, and balloon animal art. There will also be quizzes and games to play, contests to win, and something for the whole family to enjoy.
