OFA optimistic about the future of farming at annual convention
November 22, 2010 – TORONTO, ON – Today, the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) commenced its annual general meeting with an optimistic message for farmers about the future of agriculture. Held over three days in Toronto, the OFA’s annual general meeting and convention focuses this year on 'The Future of Food' – a theme that drew the attention of Ontario’s Premier.

“Farming is essential to Ontario’s economy, and the foundation of Ontario’s prosperity,” said Premier Dalton McGuinty in a video to welcome OFA delegates. “Thank you to farmers and the OFA for taking risks and for putting fresh, healthy food on our tables.”

Agriculture supports over 164,000 jobs in Ontario and brings $3.4 billion in tax revenue from farm output, according to a recent report from OFA and its partner organization, the Ontario Agriculture Sustainability Coalition. As a key economic driver in Ontario, the OFA saw an opportunity to address future changes in the agriculture and agri-business industry that can significantly impact success.

“We have seen three distinct trends in agriculture that provide viable options for future farmers – namely, food and health, energy and bio materials,” said Peter Hannam, President of Woodrill Farms Limited and guest speaker for the opening ceremony. “These are opportunities that local communities can get involved with - by farmers, for farmers.”

The convention continues through Tuesday, November 23 at the Doubletree by Hilton at Toronto Airport, with anticipated elections and a look at the next generation of farmers.
